Mathematics Laboratory:
Mathematics helps children make sense of the world around them and find meaning in the physical world. Through mathematics, children learn to understand their world in terms of numbers and shapes. They learn to reason, to connect ideas, and to think logically. Mathematics is more than the rules and operations we learned in school. It is about connections and seeing relationships in everything we do.
Mathematics has always been a very important subject to understand the physical phenomena around us. So mathematics as a tool is indispensable in our daily life. Unfortunately across the globe, the phobia for this subject is very prominent. The present education system has made a 360° shift from learning mathematics by obedience to learning by applied reasoning. This means children learn best when they are interested and even excited about what they are doing. So give your children many opportunities to see and hear different things, and to move about and play with things they can touch. Let them collect things, and show you and demonstrate concepts in their own way. Encourage children to think and show respect for their thinking and accept their point of view. Also, ask them questions that allow them to explore different ways of solving problems. But remember, it is not just the doing but the thinking that promotes learning.
Taking into consideration the national aspirations and expectations reflected in the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework developed by NCERT, the Central Board of Secondary Education had initiated a number of steps to make teaching and learning of mathematics at schools activity-based and experimentation oriented. The guidelines are
-
Foster mathematical awareness, skill building, positive attitudes and learning by doing
-
Learning concepts using concrete objects
-
Verify math facts and properties using models, measurement and activities
-
Individualized and peer learning centers: Discovery, Enrichment, Remedial and Reinforcement
-
Teachers to explain and demonstrate many concepts using charts, models, aids and activities
Objectives of Math Lab
Students will be able to:
-
Explore, reflect and interpret ideas presented through variety of medium
-
Display intellectual curiosity and initiative to acquire, process and interpret information
-
Use variety of strategies and perspectives in solving problems individually and collaboratively
-
